Hyvin kirjoitettu kirja yhdeksän naisen pakomatkasta。 Näitä lukiessa tulee aina mieleen tosiasia, että emme ole oppimeet toisesta maailmansodasta juuri mitään。 Edelleen ihmisiä hyljeksitään ja pakolaisvirrat tekeevät samanlaisia pakomatkoja edelleen。

Loved this book! So heartbreaking at times, but such a fascinating read。 I loved the way the author went through each of their lives as she told the story of their escape, and even more importantly the affects of trauma on their lives and the lives of their families。 Excellent book and well written。

Excellent read - nine different stories wrapped around one theme of survival against the Nazis。 The fortitude and perseverance of this group of women transcends anything most of us consider to be problematic。 The fact that their story was able to be told through minor threads of information is amazing。

I've read a lot of non-fiction books about the Holocaust and this is one of the best。 The author did a great job of personalizing each of the 9 women while also showing the solidarity they had when they made their daring escape and set out to find their way home。 A lot of research went into this book and the results are outstanding。 I felt like I got to know each one individually as well as collectively as they used their strengths to help each other and keep going towards their goal。I especiall I've read a lot of non-fiction books about the Holocaust and this is one of the best。 The author did a great job of personalizing each of the 9 women while also showing the solidarity they had when they made their daring escape and set out to find their way home。 A lot of research went into this book and the results are outstanding。 I felt like I got to know each one individually as well as collectively as they used their strengths to help each other and keep going towards their goal。I especially like how Strauss followed up on their lives after WWII even though each of them was very private about that part of their life - and many of their family members had no idea of the atrocities they encountered or the courage they exhibited to just stay alive。 A very well-written and researched book。 。。。more

Reading along with other autobiographical accounts for a human (not just facts) view on WWII。 I was shocked in places, saddened in others and warmed by the friendship and solidarity of the group。

I’m still pleasantly surprised by the stories of WW2 that have yet to be told。 Published in 2021, you will be blown away by this book about Nine Jewish women who were imprisoned in the worst conditions and managed to survive to eventually tell the story。Written by Gwen Strauss a niece of one of the nine, the book captures the spirit and camaraderie need to survive in the most horrible of conditions。 A story that will reaffirm your faith in the human spirit。 You must read this book。

Whew! Thoroughly researched (the author’s great aunt is one of The Nine) and positively gripping。 It feels like a movie as the women escape from German forced labor, trek across land that has a some form of danger at every turn, are captured, interrogated, and face almost certain death at the hands of the Nazis。 Forming unbreakable bonds and friendships, these women are the epitome of badass history。 Teaching this time period in my ninth grade US History course, I felt compelled to share passage Whew! This would have been better as a magazine article。 I also prefer books where the author does NOT insert themselves into the story。 I don’t care who was emailed…

Excellent story about 9 women from the Resistance who escaped Ravensbrook in WW2。 Heroic and uplifting。

This book was so eye opening to a complete other side of the suffering that happened during this part of history。 It was very well written and it was an honour to have read about these brave young women。 All nine had an important story to share and one that im glad I read 。

Straussin teos kertoo yhdeksän naisen selvitymisestä keskitysleiriltä ja pakomatkasta natsi-Saksan halki。 Naiset olivat vastarintataistelijoita, jotka selviytyivät kirjan takakannen mukaisesti diplomatian, huumorin ja kylmäpäisyyden ansiosta。 Olen lukenut useamman kirjan keskitysleireiltä selvinneistä ja ajattelin jo jollain tavalla turtuneeni näiden kirjojen tapaan käsitellä aihetta。 Straussin kirja kuitenkin poikkeaa kaikista aikaisemmin lukemistani kirjoista kahdella tavalla: Ensinnäkin kirja Straussin teos kertoo yhdeksän naisen selvitymisestä keskitysleiriltä ja pakomatkasta natsi-Saksan halki。 Naiset olivat vastarintataistelijoita, jotka selviytyivät kirjan takakannen mukaisesti diplomatian, huumorin ja kylmäpäisyyden ansiosta。 Olen lukenut useamman kirjan keskitysleireiltä selvinneistä ja ajattelin jo jollain tavalla turtuneeni näiden kirjojen tapaan käsitellä aihetta。 Straussin kirja kuitenkin poikkeaa kaikista aikaisemmin lukemistani kirjoista kahdella tavalla: Ensinnäkin kirja kertoo vastarintataistelijoista, toisekseen kirja keskittyy myös tapahtumiin keskitysleirin ja pakomatkan jälkeen。 Kirjan rakenne on suorastaan nerokas。 Yhdeksän naista esitellään vähitellen, yksi jokaisessa luvussa。 Tämä selkeyttää kerrontaa paljon ja toisaalta lukija tutustuu jokaiseen naiseen paremmin kuin vaihtoehdossa jossa kaikki naiset olisi esitelty syvällisesti aivan kirjan alussa。 Samalla tarina kuitenkin etenee kronologisesti ja kaikki naiset ovat tarinassa alusta asti mukana - heidän roolinsa vain kasvaa sitä mukaa kun heidät on esitelty tarkemmin。 Kirjan lopussa käsitellään keskitysleireiltä selvinneiden elämää keskitysleirin ja maailmansodan päättymisen jälkeen。 Harmittavan usein saman aihepiirin kirjat päättyvät keskitysleiriltä vapautumiseen, jolloin aidosti suuria kysymyksiä jää käsittelemättä: Mitä sitten? Miten sopeudutaan jälleen ”tavalliseen” elämään? Miten valtiot huolehtivat kotimaahansa palanneista? Strauss käsittelee näitä kysymyksiä ilahduttavassa laajuudessa, ja juuri kirjan loppuosa nostaakin kirjan viiden tähden kirjaksi。 。。。more

True story of nine women, 6 French, 2 Dutch and 1 Spanish during the final days of WWII。 Their friendship began in the political prisoner camp weeks before the liberation。 They were forced to march miles upon endless miles。 Each ladies’ history was told, and their arrest was detailed。 Some had broken bones, but their spirit to survive was stronger。 A few wrote memoirs, but others wanted to never speak of their time until after their death (diaries)。

Loved it。 Good for fans of The Boys in the Boat, Unbroken, etc。

Strauss' history of her great-aunt and eight other women who escaped a death march and walked to freedom across the front lines at the end of WWII is a real gem。 I tend to be a little skeptical about WWII writing, just because it can verge on hagiography, but this stands out。 Strauss interweaves the escape narrative with short biographies of each woman, and adds in contextual information about the French Resistance, concentration camp life and structure, work details, and the German civilian res Strauss' history of her great-aunt and eight other women who escaped a death march and walked to freedom across the front lines at the end of WWII is a real gem。 I tend to be a little skeptical about WWII writing, just because it can verge on hagiography, but this stands out。 Strauss interweaves the escape narrative with short biographies of each woman, and adds in contextual information about the French Resistance, concentration camp life and structure, work details, and the German civilian response to the war, as well as what happened to the women once they returned home。 She does include herself in the narrative at times, talking about the process of uncovering what happened during her research, and this does not detract from the story; Strauss makes a point in her notes to state that she is a poet, not a historian, and so her approach to researching this story does not adhere to strict historical frameworks。 But it's poignant and gritty and thoughtful, and I felt like I had a more vivid understanding of parts of the concentration camp and liberation experience than I did before reading it (or, rather, listening to it; the audio is very good, and has a few easter eggs, including a recording of a protest lament sung in the camps, and an interview with the author)。 。。。more

Rounding up to a 4 because this story is definitely one that should be read。 I am impressed with how the author was able to go into detail about the lives of all 9 women, while also jumping back and forth between time periods, and keep it straight so the reader isn't confused。 What a challenge! However, this does read a bit more like a history book rather than historical fiction with characters that you grow to love and root for。 I did enjoy it, but it was different than other novels I've read t Rounding up to a 4 because this story is definitely one that should be read。 I am impressed with how the author was able to go into detail about the lives of all 9 women, while also jumping back and forth between time periods, and keep it straight so the reader isn't confused。 What a challenge! A story of great resilience and courageThank you to the author for telling this story。 These 9 women displayed an unbelievable amount of courage resilience in their journey。 On top of that they simply never ever gave up hope, not in ravensbruck, and not when they were on the run。 It would have been far easier to simply give up any hope for the future at any point。 They had all that courage that they certainly displayed after their arrest but also prior to their arrest。 As women in the 1940s they A story of great resilience and courageThank you to the author for telling this story。 These 9 women displayed an unbelievable amount of courage resilience in their journey。 On top of that they simply never ever gave up hope, not in ravensbruck, and not when they were on the run。 It would have been far easier to simply give up any hope for the future at any point。 They had all that courage that they certainly displayed after their arrest but also prior to their arrest。 As women in the 1940s they were certainly not expected to take such prominent roles in the French resistance movement。 But they did take those risks at significant risk to themselves and their families。 Not everyone was so brave in the face of the Gestapo。 On the other hand some cooperated with the Gestapo rather than remain loyal to their native France。 Many would have simply given up even after escaping from the Nazis as they still had an awfully long way to reach the allied lines。 Keep in mind that their entire escape they were on foot, often without proper clothing and often without proper footwear if they had any at all。 I never would have thought that an escape such as this would have been possible。 Escaping from the custody of the Nazis was an accomplishment in itself。 But escaping to the allied lines in the manner described was an entirely different matter。 These 9 women are the definitions of fortitude persistence and perseverance。 That about says it for these women。 As for the author I thought that she did a great job of describing in great detail each woman and their families and with the descriptions of the various cultures encountered both in and out of the camp。 。。。more

Although a very interesting story that certainly does need to be shared with the world, the writing style felt quite awkward and the story seems to jump around a lot making it really difficult to follow。

Top class NF。 I couldn’t put this down, even though the writing and editing are a bit iffy in places。 Its about 9 women who escape from a death March at the end of WW2。 It goes armpit deep into the horrors of the Holocaust so some bits are not for the faint hearted。 Essential reading。
